I was supposed to land in Uganda today for the first day of the Women’s Empowerment Tour I was co-hosting with Yvonne Verstandig of Executive Edge Travel.
We promised the ten women joining us, an itinerary to create real change and help improve the lives of girls.
Then Covid 19 hit and the borders closed and women’s lives got even harder. We can’t get to Uganda but we can still help now, when it’s most needed. We’re working on getting women the essentials they need including food and sanitary pads and now we’ve been asked to send them bras.
It might sound like a strange request but when I was in Uganda researching girls’ rights for my latest novel, I am Change the girls i interviewed told me of the challenges they faced once they developed curves; the expectation they would stop school to marry, the harassment by their male schoolmates, the sexual advances by teachers, and the name-calling and shaming if they didn’t wear a bra. Most couldn’t afford to buy a bra. All their energy and money went towards food - and if they were still at school - their fees.
If you have any unwanted (new or used) bras, please consider donating them. We’ll arrange to get them to the girls and women living in the slums of Uganda. All you have to do is drop them at one of our 6 Melbourne collection points listed below between now and 4th June.
And please share this post. The bigger our reach, the more bras we can send!
